Sapa(Sa Pa) — a mountain town at an altitude of 1,600 m, Lào Cai Province, close to the Chinese border. Ambientrice terracesUp to 2,000 m high, one of the most beautiful in Asia. Inhabited mainly by ethnic minorities:Hmong, Dao, Tay, Giay, Xa Pho. 10,000 inhabitants of the “main” Sapa + scattered villages.
History in Brief
French colonists founded Sapa asHill stationin 1922 — a place to escape the tropical heat of Hanoi. The governor's villa, European-style hotels. In the Second War destroyed, in the 1990s rebuilt as a tourist centre. Today: a mix of authenticity and mass tourism.
Rice Terraces — A 1000-Year Heritage
Built by ethnic minorities over thousands of years. The largest area:Muong Hoa Valley, where terraces go 800 m down — 3800 hectares. The most photogenic months:
- May-June(young rice, light green)
- August-September(mature, yellow-gold —Best)
- October-November(after harvest, brown-red)
- December-March: empty, frequent fog, sometimes snow on the highest parts
Trekking — Most Popular Routes
Cat Cat Village (easy)
3 km from Sapa, 1-2 hours walk or taxi. The village of Hmong, traditional houses, waterfall. Very touristy, lots of stalls with craftsmanship. Introduction 90 000 VND.
Lao Chai + Ta Van (average)
Classic: 12 km walk from Sapa down Muong Hoa Valley. Through the villages of Hmong (Lao Chai) and Giay (Ta Van). Overnight at homestay Ta Van for 200,000-400 000 VND with dinner. Return taxi or walk with a professional guide.
Y Linh Ho + Ta Phin (difficult)
20 km, 2 days with accommodation in homestay. The villages of Dao Red (Red Dao) — women wear distinctive red scarves. Herbal baths (Dao tradition — good for circulation and skin).
Fansipan Summit (3143 m)
Top of Indochin(‘Dach Indochin’). Two options:
- Railway wagon(since 2016): 6300 m long, 15 min, 800,000 VND in both directions. From upper station + 20 min walk or stairs + monorail 200,000 VND
- Trekking: 2-3 days, requires guide (compulsory — from 3,000,000 VND per trip). Overnight in the cabin. For professionals
On top: bronze statue of Buddha 21 m, panorama of Indochin.
Ethnic minorities
Hmong (H'mông)
Sapa’s largest ethnic group —200,000 in Lào Cai Province. Migration from China in the 18th-XIXth century. Subgroups:Black Hmong(most numerous),Flower Hmong,Green Hmong. Distinctive outfits: women wear batty indigo skirts + embroidered aprons, silver jewelry. They trade at the fair on Fridays (Bac Ha — 100 km from Sapa).
Dao (Yao)
Second group —Red Dao(women in red scarves),Black Dao. Known for herb baths. Homestay Ta Phin — Best Base.
Women guides
Characteristic attraction:The Hmongs accompany tourists all dayas informal guides, at the end they offer to buy crafts. NORMA — choose a woman, contract a price before (30-50 USD/day + purchase 20-30 USD craftsmanship).
Bac Ha Sunday Market
Vietnam's most colorful market.Every Sunday in Bac Ha (100 km from Sapa, 3 hours by bus). Minorities are gathering from all over the region (Flower Hmong, Phu La, Nung). Sales: buffalo, horses, traditional outfits, food. Authentic (not for tourists). Go at dawn.
Northern mountain kitchen
Thêng cê
Traditional Hmong dish: ravenly cooked soup from all buffalo or horse (meat + guts) in a boiler. It's like a bullion, but very strong. Served at a folk fair. For the brave.
Cá suïi nướng (grilled mountain fish)
Small fish with mountain streams, grilled with rice shell, herbs. 200,000-350 000 VND.
Rượu ngô (corn vodka)
Traditional Hmong alcohol from fermented corn. 30-50% alcohol. Always served to welcome guests to villages.

- Cableway to Fansipan: first entries 7:30, online sale of reservations for days in a row (less crowds)
- Season: March-May + September-November (best time). Winter (December-February): fog, temperature 5-10°C, cascade Silver Fall freezes. Year: 15-25°C average
- Clothes: layers — morning/evening cold, in the sun warm. DO NOT forget the waterproof jacket ( fog + rain)
